As is known to all, Mountain Taihang spans four provinces namely Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Henan. It is a major mountain range and geological boundary in the eastern part of China. It is over 1200 meters in elevation in most places. With the mountain running from the north to the south, it contains myriads towering precipices and is easy to hold but hard to attack. It is a hotly contested spot by military strategists throughout generations. During the Anti-Japanese War period, it is a natural battlefield for launching guerrilla warfare. The national revolutionary army under the leadership of the Communist Party and people living in Mountain Taihang got united and founded Mountain Taihang Revolutionary Base. They went through eight toiling years combating the Japanese intruders in this backward mountainous area. Free from modernized weapons, they only have ‘millet and rifle’, but they were up against intruders who far outperformed them with modernized airplanes and cannons. As the revolutionary base was deprived of grains, they had to grow plants on their own. They were compelled to make their own garments, excavate water on their own and grow vegetables. Soldiers of all ranks would join the masses in pulling through difficulties. The Communist Party won over the masses and the war with Taihang spirit of hard work, plain living and cooperation between soldiers and the masses. Taihang spirit is the heritage of residents in Taihang. It congregates spirits for struggles among Chinese people. It will be forever the valuable spiritual treasure for the Chinese nation.
